I have a script that does a lot of legwork nightly.

It uses a PDO prepared statement that executes in a loop.

The first few are running fine, but then I get to a point where they all fail with the error: "MySQL server has gone away".

We run MySQL 5.0.77.

PHP Version 5.2.12

The rest of the site runs fine.

The B.5.2.9. MySQL server has gone away section of the MySQL manual has a list of possible causes for this error.

Maybe you are in one of those situations ? -- Especially considering you are running a long operation, the point about wait_timeout might be interesting...

The following works for me:

<?php

$pdo = new PDO("mysql:host=localhost;dbname=test", "root", "pass");
$pdo->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION);
$pdo->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES, false);

$stmt = $pdo->prepare("INSERT INTO `null_test` (`can_be_null`) VALUES (:null)");
$stmt->bindValue(":null", null, PDO::PARAM_NULL);

$stmt->execute();

Pass in PHP's null, with type of PDO::PARAM_NULL. Also, make sure your prepare emulation is set to false. That might help.

lastInsertId() is a method of the PDO class, not the PDOStatement class.

This should work:

$groupID = $dbo->lastInsertId();

Change the port no. to 3306

$dbh =  new PDO('mysql:host=127.0.0.1;port=3306;dbname=nde_oldy-pn', 'root', '');

This is not a Laravel issue, but a general MySQL Issue. Maybe the server is not running. Are you sure you're running MySQL in the background?

Check this link: MySQL Gone Away

Do the following checks in your system:

  1. The Database Engine is running
  2. You have created your database
  3. You have created an user and granted permissions to the database
  4. You have setup the user and the database in your Laravel's .env file.

After this, try to run the migrations command again, which is:

php artisan migrate

As explained Here

Let us know if that helps :).
