You can use parse_url();

$url = 'http://www.mydomain.com/abc/';

print_r(parse_url($url));

echo parse_url($url, PHP_URL_PATH);

which would give you

Array
(
    [scheme] => http
    [host] => www.mydomain.com
    [path] => /abc/
)
/abc/
